Music In Liturgy

Music is an integral part of the liturgical rites of the Roman Catholic Church, and the Roman Catholic parish of Penzance tries to ensure that we follow the vision portrayed following the reforms of the 2nd vatican council. The parish has, since its inception in the 1840’s always had a good musical tradition, which is still thriving today.

Good, and well prepared liturgical music enriches and enhances all aspects of our celebrations. It is no accident that from earliest times singing has always been an integral part of the celebration of Mass – it should never be seen to be an attractive addition or an option as is frequently misunderstood in some cicles within the Church worldwide. We are a parish that has not stopped using Gregorian Chant following the reforms, and so, when it is used all the faithful are able to fully participate in that that is rightfully theirs to sing.

When we sing, to use the old familiar scriptural expression, we do so with heart and voice, with all that implies.

As St Augustine said, he who sings, prays twice!
