The Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady in Penzance in Cornwall has always enjoyed a fine tradition of church music. The aim of the music department of this parish church is to enrich and integrally enhance the liturgy as envisaged following the 2nd Vatican council. This ‘actual participation’ of the assembled faithful, includes much for the congregation to join in with, and quality music sung by the choir the the whole congregation can listen to and lift their hearts and minds to God.
The Director of Music ensures that we use a wide range of musical resources from the early years of the church, right through to modern times, using the Gregorian chant and polyphony that is such an integral part of our Roman Catholic heritage.
This site contains information about the music used, the organ, the choir, the biennial Music Festival, the history of the church, and much more. For ease of reference, it will include information about Mass times. The music ministry department is just one amongst the many ministries of the parish, and much more information is on the parish home site. Useful links are in the menu.
The fine church here in Penzance is the Parish Church for the newly created Parish of the Holy Family, the most south-westerly in Britain, and includes St. Ives, Hayle, the surrounding area and the Isles of Scilly. Visitors to Penzance can enjoy Mass in this wonderful setting of the newly decorated church that is in the midst of an ongoing restoration and enlargement project. They take away with them the experience of a beautiful part of Britain, a vibrant parish community and good liturgical music.
At present the historical organ is being fully overhauled and it is hoped that it will be ready for use by next Easter. A temporary pipe organ has been erected in the North-East corner of the Sanctuary to lead the singing during these works.
